  • BISON IN YELLOWSTONE

    BISON IN YELLOWSTONE

This massive beast seems very placid. Having seen what could happen, I would never get this close to a wild animal of this size again. One of the thousands of Bison that roam the plains in Yellowstone National Park.

  • BIGHORN RAM IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

BIGHORN RAM IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

This young bighorn ram was not skittish around hikers. He didn't approach, but he didn't run away.

  • MOOSE IN FISHERCAP LAKE, GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

MOOSE IN FISHERCAP LAKE, GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

Moose love to eat the plants at the bottom of shallow lakes. In many places, they will show up in the same lake every afternoon. I know that moose is a large and potentially dangerous animal. I was keeping a respectful distance (along with a dozen other hikers) shooting with a telephoto lens. A second moose walked down the path and into the lake about 30 feet from me. Everyone stayed still. When she was past me I took a few shots quietly. Once she was well out into the lake, I quietly left.

  • BULL ELK IN ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

BULL ELK IN ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

This elk appeared to be posing as he walked back and forth along a ridge about 200 feet from Trail Ridge Road. After driving around the corner and looking back, I learned that this bull was protecting his harem which was just below the ridge.

  • HORNETS LOVE CONEFLOWERS

    HORNETS LOVE CONEFLOWERS

I was never a fan of hornets after an unfortunate incident at Scout Camp when someone disturbed a hornet's nest on a nature hike. (I was on crutches and couldn't run fast enough to get away.) After watching them gather nectar from flowers (pollinating them in the process) I've come to respect their role in nature.

MONARCH BUTTERFLY ON ZINNIA AT HIGHLAND PARK

I shot more than 100 photos of this butterfly. It was the only one in the Zinnia bed that day. This was the only one where it had its wings open.

  • SQUIRREL IN BACKYARD

    SQUIRREL IN BACKYARD

This squirrel thinks he is safe because he is 15 feet up in a tree. He doesn't seem to care that I am 15 feet up in a bedroom window. I did a lot of rear window photography while recovering from ankle surgery. I was kind of like Jimmie Stewart in "Rear Window" without all of the murder and intrigue (and the good looks and acting ability and...)

  • RABBIT IN BACKYARD

    RABBIT IN BACKYARD

This guy loves to eat my wife's flowers. Sometimes he will pose for a photo. I did a lot of rear window photography while recovering from ankle surgery. I was kind of like Jimmie Stewart in "Rear Window" without all of the murder and intrigue (and the good looks and acting ability and...)

  • NEWBORN FAWN UNDER APPLE TREE

    NEWBORN FAWN UNDER APPLE TREE

Deer loved our yard. We didn't have a dog (at the time) and we had lots of apples in the fall. On two occasions, a doe dropped a newborn fawn in our yard. Photo by Scott Andrews
