  • WAILUA FALLS, KAUAI, HI

    WAILUA FALLS, KAUAI, HI

This double waterfall is one of many waterfalls in Kauai. It was once featured on the opening for the "Fantasy Island" TV show. An overlook provides a good view. The trail to the bottom of the falls is dangerous. I like to explore waterfalls, but I was convinced not to attempt this trail.

  • MCWAY FALLS IN JULIA PFEIFFER BURNS STATE PARK, CA

MCWAY FALLS IN JULIA PFEIFFER BURNS STATE PARK, CA

This is one of the prettiest spots on the California coast. Park on the east side of the highway. Go through the tunnel under CA-1 and get ready for the "Oh my God!" moment when you reach the other side.

  • WATERFALL IN JULIA PFEIFFER BURNS STATE PARK, CA

WATERFALL IN JULIA PFEIFFER BURNS STATE PARK, CA

If you walk up the creek from McWay Falls, you can find this more intimate waterfall. Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is one of the prettiest spots on the California coast highway. This waterfall is near the parking lot.

  • VIRGIN CREEK FALLS

    VIRGIN CREEK FALLS

Virgin creek tumbles down Mt. Alyeska in Girdwood, AK.

  • BRIDAL VEIL FALLS, YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

BRIDAL VEIL FALLS, YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

Although not nearly as high as Yosemite Falls, Bridal Veil Falls has a commanding presence in Yosemite valley. It is the first major waterfall visitors see when they drive into the valley.

  • YOSEMITE FALLS

    YOSEMITE FALLS

One of the few places where one can see both the upper and lower parts of Yosemite Falls. This waterfall is the 6th tallest in the US but is often rated the 2nd "best" waterfall after Niagara Falls. To enjoy this waterfall, come in the spring. It dries up in the summer.

  • BARING FALLS IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

BARING FALLS IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

One of the prettiest waterfalls in Glacier National Park. About a quarter-mile from the trailhead.

  • APIKUNI FALLS, GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

    APIKUNI FALLS, GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

Apikuni Falls is one of many stunning waterfalls in Glacier National Park. This "out-of-border" (OOB) composition enhances the depth of the image. Since there is an internal border, a frameless mount on metal, acrylic, canvas, or wood would be a good choice.

  • APIKUNI FALLS IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

APIKUNI FALLS IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

A 1.2-mile hike and a 700-foot climb bring you to this gem.

  • I knew there was a spot of sunshine on the flLOWER FALLS OF THE YELLOWSTONE RIVER

I knew there was a spot of sunshine on the flLOWER FALLS OF THE YELLOWSTONE RIVER

Uncle Tom's Trail descends 500 feet into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River for an up-close-and-personal view of the Lower Falls. The trail is only 0.7 miles long but includes 328 stairsteps. The original trail had rope ladders. Shot on color negative film in 1994.

  • LOWER FALLS OF THE YELLOWSTONE RIVER

LOWER FALLS OF THE YELLOWSTONE RIVER

On a sunny day, you may find a rainbow. From Uncle Tom's Trail: 0.7 miles, 500-foot descent. This 1994 image started with an exposure series on Kodachrome slide film. Three slides were scanned and combined with tone-mapping software. This approach circumvents the major limitation of Kodachrome--the lack of latitude. I had just started using Photoshop in 1994 and didn't own a scanner. The scanning and combination of these slides occurred in 2021.

  • LITTLE NAVAJO FALLS

    LITTLE NAVAJO FALLS

You will pass by this waterfall as you hike to Havasu Falls and Mooney Falls. When we visited in 2010, this waterfall was unnamed. It was created in 2008 when a flash flood re-arranged what used to be Navajo Falls. We later learned that it had been named Rock Falls. Current maps show it as Little Navajo Falls.

  • HAVASU FALLS

    HAVASU FALLS

Havasu Falls is deep in a side canyon of the Grand Canyon. The water in the creek percolates through a layer of limestone and is saturated with calcium carbonate. The blue-green color of the water and the limestone terraces are a trademark of this place. Havasu Canyon is accessible by foot, horse, or helicopter. When we visited in 2010 it was just 2 years since a flash flood had wiped out many of the limestone formations. They were starting to build up again. A ranger had a classic quote: "There is no destruction here--only continued creation."

  • COVERED BRIDGE AND MILL IN BRIDGETON, IN

COVERED BRIDGE AND MILL IN BRIDGETON, IN

Step back in time down by the old mill stream. Walk across the covered bridge and visit the old mill. It is grinding grain again. Parke County, Indiana is famous for covered bridges. This is the only two-span covered bridge in the county. The mill dates back to 1823.

  • FALLS IN MCCORMICK'S CREEK STATE PARK, IN

FALLS IN MCCORMICK'S CREEK STATE PARK, IN

There is no special name for this waterfall. It is known as "The Falls" in McCormick's Creek State Park. There aren't that many waterfalls in my native state of Indiana.

  • FROM BEHIND THE FALLS IN MCCORMICK'S CREEK STATE PARK, IN

FROM BEHIND THE FALLS IN MCCORMICK'S CREEK STATE PARK, IN

Waterfalls always look different from different angles. Getting behind a waterfall is a treat.

  • UPPER FALLS, HOCKING HILLS STATE PARK

UPPER FALLS, HOCKING HILLS STATE PARK

This is where the canyon starts. There are many waterfalls and caves to see in this gorge.

  • LOWER FALLS AT HOCKING HILLS STATE PARK

LOWER FALLS AT HOCKING HILLS STATE PARK

A narrow stream springs from a deep forest and plunges over sandstone cliffs.

  • CEDAR FALLS IN HOCKING HILLS STATE PARK, OH

CEDAR FALLS IN HOCKING HILLS STATE PARK, OH

The original European settlers named this Cedar Falls. The surrounding trees are mostly Hemlock. This image is a combination of 71 individual images. It is a faithful rendition of what the waterfall looked like except for the "little red riding hood" who was inserted to provide some scale to the image.

  • ASH CAVE FALLS, HOCKING HILLS STATE PARK

ASH CAVE FALLS, HOCKING HILLS STATE PARK

The name of this place came from the ashes of ancient campfires. With fire for warmth, an overhanging cliff for shelter, and a stream the people who lived here were living in luxury by ancient standards.

  • AMERICAN FALLS AT NIGHT

    AMERICAN FALLS AT NIGHT

Niagara Falls are illuminated every evening. I never get tired of watching the falls.

  • HORSESHOE FALLS

    HORSESHOE FALLS

At the upstream part of Horseshoe Falls, a wide and fast-moving river suddenly drops 188 feet into the Niagara Gorge.

  • BRIDAL VEIL FALLS

    BRIDAL VEIL FALLS

Bridal Veil Falls is the "little" (by Niagara standards) falls between the American and Canadian Falls. The red walkways for visitors on the Cave-of-the-Winds trip must be rebuilt each year.

  • WARSAW FALLS

    WARSAW FALLS

A half-mile hike up the creek brings you to this 80-foot waterfall near Warsaw, NY

  • NIAGARA FALLS

    NIAGARA FALLS

The classic view of Niagara Falls from the New York Observation tower.

  • Wiscoy Falls

    Wiscoy Falls

Wiscoy Creek is a tributary of the Genesee. Wiscoy Falls is just south of Portageville.

  • UPPER FALLS IN LETCHWORTH AND MILKY WAY (COMPOSITE)

UPPER FALLS IN LETCHWORTH AND MILKY WAY (COMPOSITE)

It is not easy to see with the naked eye, but the Milky Way is always there on a clear night. The railroad bridge above the falls has become as much of an icon as the waterfall.

  • MILKY WAY ABOVE UPPER FALLS IN LETCHWORTH STATE PARK

MILKY WAY ABOVE UPPER FALLS IN LETCHWORTH STATE PARK

In mid-summer, the Milky Way lines up with the Genesee river valley above the Upper Falls in Letchworth State Park. I'm happy to share this photo with others. While I was taking the photo my only company was a deer, a fox, two raccoons, and some lightning bugs (fireflies).

  • Upper Falls in Winter

    Upper Falls in Winter

The spray from the falls forms huge stalactite-like icicles.

  • MIDDLE FALLS IN LETCHWORTH STATE PARK

MIDDLE FALLS IN LETCHWORTH STATE PARK

Fall foliage provides a beautiful backdrop to a major waterfall on the Genesee River. There are two places where the Genesee River was pushed out of its pre-ice age valley. One spot was Letchworth State Park where the river carved a canyon with three major waterfalls. The other spot was in Rochester, NY where the river in its newly carved canyon plunges over the Niagara Escarpment.

  • The profile of a Seneca Chief appears in the falls

The profile of a Seneca Chief appears in the falls

The Senecas were the Keepers of the Western Door for the Iroquois Nation. Their land included the falls along the Genesee River. When the water level is just right, a profile of a Seneca Chief appears in the middle of the falls.

  • INSPIRATION POINT, LETCHWORTH STATE PARK

    INSPIRATION POINT, LETCHWORTH STATE PARK

From Inspiration Point one can see two major waterfalls on the Genesee River and the gorge that the river carved. In October, the red, yellow, and orange foliage attracts large crowds.

  • MILKY WAY FROM INSPIRATION POINT IN LETCHWORTH SP, NY

MILKY WAY FROM INSPIRATION POINT IN LETCHWORTH SP, NY

During the early morning hours of August, the Milky Way is vertical in the south-southwest. Near the center of the bottom of the photo is the Middle Falls. The light is coming from the Glen Iris Inn. During daylight, the Upper Falls and the railroad bridge would be visible above the Middle Falls. Milky Way photography is often a lonely endeavor. On this occasion, I met another photographer shooting the same scene. Joe Kopp does some nice work in this area.

  • LOWER FALLS IN LETCHWORTH STATE PARK, NY

LOWER FALLS IN LETCHWORTH STATE PARK, NY

The 0.3-mile hike down in the gorge is delightful on a sunny fall day. The stone footbridge across the river is an ideal spot to view the falls. From the west side, this requires about a 0.3-mile hike. From the east side, it is over 1 mile

  • High Falls in Winter

    High Falls in Winter

  • HIGH FALLS SUNSET

    HIGH FALLS SUNSET

Illuminated High Falls at sunset. Sometimes, I get lucky. I went to the High Falls in Rochester hoping there would be some clouds to make the sunset more interesting. The clouds appeared on the horizon as the sun was setting. When the sun was below the horizon, the floodlights were turned on. I haven't seen them in use for 10 years. The Empire Service train was also pulling out of the nearby station and was crossing the trestle above the falls.

  • ILLUMINATED HIGH FALLS

    ILLUMINATED HIGH FALLS

The floodlights were originally installed to augment a laser show. The lasers are long gone, but the floodlights have been returned to service.

  • ILLUMINATED HIGH FALLS

Venus hangs over the High Falls at sunset.

  • ILLUMINATED HIGH FALLS AT SUNSET

    ILLUMINATED HIGH FALLS AT SUNSET

In the winter the sun sets closer to the Falls (from the observation deck)

  • LOWER FALLS + MILKY WAY

    LOWER FALLS + MILKY WAY

No one has seen the Milky Way from Rochester for a century. If there was a massive power outage, the Milky Way would look like this in July. (Of course, you wouldn't see much of the waterfall.)

  • RAINBOW FROM THE BRINK OF LOWER FALLS

RAINBOW FROM THE BRINK OF LOWER FALLS

If the flow rate is above 2000 CFS and the sun is shining there will be rainbows. Sometimes you need to climb out on rocks in the river to see it.

  • LOWER FALLS OF THE GENESEE RIVER

LOWER FALLS OF THE GENESEE RIVER

View from the brink. Getting up close and personal.

  • RAINBOW AT LOWER FALLS IN WINTER

RAINBOW AT LOWER FALLS IN WINTER

Finding a rainbow at the lower falls is easy. Finding one when neither the ground nor the water is brown requires persistence and good fortune.

  • FISHERMEN AT LOWER FALLS

    FISHERMEN AT LOWER FALLS

I've always liked the contrast between placid fishermen and the raging torrent behind them.

  • LOWER FALLS IN ROCHESTER, NY

    LOWER FALLS IN ROCHESTER, NY

When the river isn't too high and the trail isn't too muddy or icy, it is fun to hike down into the gorge and get close to the waterfall.

  • Lower Falls of the Genesee River in Rochester

The trees are turning. This is looking under the Driving Park Bridge.

  • ZOO FALLS

    ZOO FALLS

A small stream flows past the Seneca Park Zoo and then cascades over the limestone and shale into the Genesee River Gorge.

  • "POSTCARD FALLS" IN CORBETT'S GLEN

    "POSTCARD FALLS" IN CORBETT'S GLEN

A pleasant stroll on a summer evening This was shot in 2005 on a Kodak DCS 460 digital camera, one of the first professional digital cameras.
