WASHINGTON MONUMENT AT CHERRY BLOSSOM TIME
When completed in 1884, the Washington Monument was the tallest monument in the world. It has been surpassed by the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the San Jacinto Monument in La Porte, Texas, and the Juche Tower in Pyongyang, North Korea. The cherry trees were a gift from the Mayor of Tokyo to the United States in 1912. The gift celebrates the friendship between the Japanese and American people. On this particular warm sunny day in March, it seemed like everyone in the city wanted to walk around the tidal basin. It was a very friendly crowd.
